Process

Drawing in monotone with pencils and charcoal is my preferred way when sketching. I mostly use H-HB pencils to achieve a great number of light and dark tones, but when I am working on a piece that is A3 or larger I switch to charcoal as it is easier to manoeuvre and achieve dark tones quickly and efficiently.

When using pen the technique I like to use is cross-hatching as it allows me to make the artwork as realistic as possible and its not as tiring as if I were to simply colour in with it, the cross-hatching also gives a great effect of texture as pen strokes are overlapping one another.
